4th 180° Thermostat Since FBO/Tune/Whipple???

870 Views 24 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Zar_Trackhawk
4th time my 180° stat has stuck since my FBO/Whipple upgrades. I run straight E85. My builder keeps replacing with the same stat & this keeps happening. Could it be a sensor? Tune?

I am scheduled to put in an F1 stage 2 intercooler in 2 weeks. Will that solve the problem??

Builder can't figure this out & I am lost. HELP PLEASE.

Sounds like you have a nice build. It seems like the Trackhawk has more cooling issue than Hellcats. I upgraded my cap to prevent my problems with coolant leakage. Hopefully you get it sorted out.
Thx man. What kind of thermo did you go with?
I don’t think the interchiller is going to help, the colder the intake air the more power you can produce which means more engine heat to dissapate. Maybe another brand of thermostat, upgraded radiator fans, bigger cooling radiator, it just could be the water pump speed increase because of crank pulley swap. When the thermostat opens the speed of the coolant could be forcing the thermostat housing, bending/ deforming it to a point where it can’t open or close anymore. Try and get a custom pulley for the water pump to bring it back down to stock rpms. Just some thoughts.

If you don’t like the product it is still an informative read.Mentioning the fact that the speed of the water can over come the thermostat spring keeping it closed. Which seems about right if the crank pulley has been changed. I don’t think thermostat manufactures are taking into account the increased coolant flow on modified supercharged engines, all they do is decrease the opening temp of the thermostat without taking into account that the velocity of the coolant pushing against the opening flap of the thermostat will push is shut.
The crank pulley swap only affects the blower belt, the other part of the pulley is unchanged.

To OP:
I’m on my 3rd or 4th one too. I just get whatever’s at the local parts store after the second one. In my opinion, they are like blower belts. You’re gonna need to keep a spare on hand or change them regularly.

I'm on my 2nd Mishimoto 180 degree.

Wow great feedback Thank You! I'll bring this up & see what they say. Appreciate you!
I currently have (GATES 34253S - Heavy Duty) Had it for about 10k miles, so far so good. I do however see my temps go to 220-230 in traffic, but I assume it's because my fan doesn't come on for some reason.

Bought 2nd but different one (MOTORAD 416180 (416-180)) just in case my GATES one fails.
Thank you. Might want to be careful @ 230 in traffic. My guy tells me long periods of high Temps will shorten your motor life. Thx for the info.

Yeah, it's weird how it does it. I have the Gates thermo for over a year now, drove 10k miles, and it only did that 2 times. However, when it gets that hot I just switch it to Track mode and fans came on automatically.
I'm running a Gates 180, hasn't been over 185 in S Florida heat. You should be able to hear the fan roaring before the engine gets hot.
Thx. I didn't know that track mode switches the fan on. Good info thanks!
On that note, has anyone had those problem because the fan wasn't working right? Could that be the cause??

Just a thought, but maybe you should check the fan settings. Do you have access to HP tuners?
Yes I do as a matter of fact I'm loading a new tune tonight. What do I look for on the fan settings?
Here is a shot of mine.

I got my stock thermostat changed to a 190 thermostat and now my mpg average is 9.3 from 11.3 mpg average. Is this normal?

The two should not be related.

What would cause the mpg to be that bad? I’m on stock tune.
