Trans giving me whiplash at stop signs

6408 Views 30 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Lil Hemi
Hey gang, myself n Rocketw19 have been noticing that when we slow down for a stop sign, and don’t make a full stop, sometimes we get a whiplash like reaction from the trans. It’s not always but it happens more than I’m comfortable with. We were thinking it was related to our Livernois 1025 packages with trans tune but I saw this on the FB group. Has anyone else had anything similar with their trans? Tuned or stock? We spoke to another member with the Livernois 975 package n he just loves his trans tune so we are thinking we might have a trans issue that hasn’t fully presented itself yet and these are symptoms of something coming. The FB group is private so links probably won’t work, I attached screenshots. Please chime in if you’ve experienced something similar.

There is a TSB that is related to shift quality

I don’t know if that 5 year old TSB applies to the current TH drivetrain. I have had some unusual “ stalled” down shifts when slowing down for a red light, leading to an occasional semi-abrupt engagement upon light throttle application ( almost like a slip-grab feeling in the drivetrain).
I had a similar shift scenario in my ( then new) 2010 Ecotech MKT. It startled me so much the first time it happened that I checked my rear view mirror to see if I had been rear ended.

I will mention it to the dealer when I bring my vehicle back next week.

Plus, Rocket n I have the Livernois transmission tune so if it was software I’d think that would’ve taken care of it but it seems to have caused or greatly exacerbated the symptoms.
If it’s the same torque converter type slip I think we are all talking about, there is a tsb somewhere for it. That may not be it.

Most seem to be early 2018 models that have the issue.

And per the trans tune, good point, but I don’t believe they re-write the entire tuning, they just modify it. If the issues is not modified, it’ll still be present, and maybe amplified from the other changes.

That’s twice you’ve said I should’ve left it stock. Do you know something I don’t? You have ESP? A Palm reader? Good old fashioned carny Gypsy? Maybe you work for the NSA? CIA? MIB?? CVS?

Whatever the case, share your info if you can.
I have had no issues with trans jumping like you describe. Im running on the stock trans tune and I have the same package you have. Lil Hemi, what does your boost max out at now with your set up?
Idk, I haven’t really looked at that much. I’ll have to give it a look next time I go WOT n report back. At a glance it looks close to 20 on the chart.
My tuner said my boost max hit 19. They thought that was a lot. The power with the upper and lower pulley being changed is super significant from when I only did the lower. Its like scary now the difference.
Yeah, it’s good fun for sure. I put on spacer plates too, sposed to help boost a tad. The SC gaskets can be a cause of lost boost, it sure looked dirty to me when there should only be air in that area when I did mine. U on E85 too?
im the one that did meth.. see my instagram for the install. scott_kaz73 -- truck runs real strong. Meth was set to spray at 8psi all the way into max boost. I dont know that I will ever want to sell this truck, I dont believe I will ever have another vehicle more fun then this one.
Oh yeah, I remember now. No corn is ur zone. I’m with u man, this truck is stupid fun. My first boosted V8 and I’m not missing turbo lag at all. Have to completely change my driving style when I switch over to the car.
How’s that meth working out for ya?

yup I never looked either but I do think Ive seen 20.
I dont know whats its supposed to be so I dont pay attention to it,lol.

what are you intake temps at now with the spacers? do you remember before and after?
the transmission calibration doesn't adjust any coast down (off throttle) downshifts and they are 100% stock as negative torque situations rarely need adjustments from stock unless you're changing friction materials.

I am guessing here, but does this primarily act up in auto or sport mode? I am guessing the problem nearly goes away in track mode if not completely.
In my case it is much, much more pronounced in track mode but these aren’t track like conditions, just gentle driving while in track mode.

at what point of mods do you need a trans tune to keep things safe?

or is the trans tune simply for faster shifts?

So far so good with the meth, no drivability issues at all, no check engine lights. Where I notice the difference really is now that I added the 2.85 pulley to accompany the lower metco pulley.. that upper is a game changer. I should have done that first from the get go. I still have not gone super hard on this truck since switching to the new set up. The weather has sucked in massachusetts rain and colder. Plus, I am a still trying to get used to the new power it delivers now, the power points are very different. Its night and day.
